There are pros and cons to driving vs. flying and stay on Disney vs. staying off property.
If you fly, you will need to stay on property. I'm guessing you are too young to rent a car. By staying off property you can use the Disney transportation system from the airport and can use it to travel to all the Disney parks. You will be limited to do just Disney stuff with this option. Staying on property is more expensive. The Disney hotels cost more, and all food you buy will be from a Disney owned restaurant which will cost more than eating off property.
If you drive, then you will have your car with you and will have the option of staying off property. This will definitely be cheaper. You can save money on food by eating at restaurants off Disney property or can shop at a local grocery store to cut costs even further. The downside is the time it takes you to drive to and from Orlando. You didn't say where you were from, so I can't give you a full answer. How should i plan a senior trip to disney world?
You should stay at Pop Century Resort or one of the All Star resorts- All of those are value resorts on property.
Regarding flying or driving, I think it depends on where you live. My family has always driven, but that's because we live 8 hours away in Georgia.
