thanks for your help! What exactly is Disney and Universal studios and pixar and stuff like that?
they do everything from producing films, put up the money to get them made to having lots and sets in which films are shot, they have animation departments where animated film are made and sound studios where Voice over tracks can be laid down. the also have departments dedicated to acquiring right to films for distribution film they had nothing to with creatively the just want to put them into American theaters or straight onto DVD and package them with a Disney LogoWhat exactly is Disney and Universal studios and pixar and stuff like that?
There are production companies and distributors.

The first logo you see before a movie is often the distributor. These are the SUPER famous companies: 20th Century Fox, Disney, Universal, and Sony's Columbia Pictures. There are mid-sized and smaller distributors, too, such as Lionsgate or Freestyle Releasing. And most of the big distributors also release movies through smaller shingles. For example, Universal will often release "art films" (Lost in Translation, Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, Brokeback Mountain, Jane Eyre, Hanna) through Focus Features.

There are also production companies, who produce or co-produce movies (they contribute cash and logistical support). Pixar is a production company. They craft the film and then Disney releases it. Imagine is a famous production company associated with filmmaker Ron Howard. What exactly is Disney and Universal studios and pixar and stuff like that?
There just productions.
