Where would you recommend going to a birthday dinner in Disney World?

I'm planning a vacation to Disney World this Summer which happens to fall on my birthday. I'd like to do a character breakfast but I don't want my dinner to fall short. I don't want a character dinner and it doesn't necessarily have to be a buffet. But i'd like my birthday dinner at Walt Disney World to be special as well as the breakfast. Which restaurants at the Walt Disney World Resort would you recommend going to dinner on your birthday?Where would you recommend going to a birthday dinner in Disney World?
That is a great question. They're all nice, but I go to different restaurants for different reasons. Only one restaurant on property isn't really a place to take kids (Victoria and Albert's at the Grand Floridian). When you try to make your reservations remember that Le Cellier in Epcot, and O'hana at the Poly are booked 180 days out for a reason. Others that would be great for a birthday are Whispering Canyon Cafe at Wilderness Lodge (good food, great atmosphere for birthday), Coral Reef at Epcot (good food, living seas aquarium as the front wall of restaurant). California Grill at the Contemporary (great food, great location overlooking MK, expensive). Wolfgang Puck Cafe in Downtown Disney (fantastic food, family friendly)

You can now make dining reservations online under the plan tab at disneyworld.com. You can book 180 days out. Remember if you don't get your first choice when you try, make a reservation for something that will work and keep trying. You can always cancel what you don't want. One more thing...the search engine will give you a few alternates if your choice is not available. Keep putting your choices in the search.

Also, Disney has a birthday pin that you should wear. It will help cast members and guests identify you as celebrating your special day. Little surprises can happen throughout the day: cast members who will sing you songs, surprise FastPasses, free stickers, phone calls from Goofy, free desserts. These are spontaneous things, so you can't count on them, but they have all happened to me. Be sure to mention it's your birthday when making your dining reservation, as that means special treatment too.

Hope I helped!
If I had to choose just one restaurant I would probably pick Ohana. I love the location and the view of Cinderella's Castle.

You don't mention your age or interests so it is hard to be specific. However I will suggest our favorite non-character meals that have a "special" factor:

Coral Reef @ Epcot: Sit down restaurant. 1 wall is the Living Seas Aquarium. A bit quieter than a lot of WDW restaurants

Biergarten @ Epcot: German Buffet with live entertainment

Boma @ Animal Kingdom Lodge: Africa buffet. The food is amazing. Nothing special about the restaurant, but I suggest taking time to walk around the resort.

'Ohana @ Polynesian: All you can eat pan-asian inspired food brought to the table. Family entertainment
Here are a few ideas for a birthday dinner at Walt Disney World:

The Fantasmic Dinner Package at Hollywood Studios; choice of 3 restaurants, The Brown Derby, Mama Melrose's Italian, or Hollywood and Vine

You get dinner and then reserved seating for the Fantasmic Show

Aloha Dinner Show at the PolynesianWhere would you recommend going to a birthday dinner in Disney World?
I know you said you didn't want a character dinner but, if I would choose Cinderella's Royal Table for my Birthday dinner location.

Getting to eat in the castle would be my ultimate dream for my birthday, I'd feel just like a princess. I would also try to make the reservation at a time where when you were done eating you could go outside and watch the fireworks.

Some other places that are nice to eat at for an occasion like that are:

The Coral Reef in Epcot, watching those fish right near your table would be quite exciting.

The Le Cellier Steakhouse in Epcot, the food there is quite delicious!

The Wave at the Contemporary, is also good!
